Youth Sports Coaches are “Unsung Heroes” – And Essential to Stronger Communities

A male coach in a maroon U.S. Soccer Foundation shirt smiles as he gathers a diverse group of young children in green soccer jerseys in a huddle on a grassy field. They appear engaged and happy, with a school building and trees in the background.

As we gear up to welcome the world for FIFA World Cup 26™, Americans are recognizing a powerful truth: youth sports coaches are the unsung heroes, building stronger communities and making a difference every day.

New YouGov research, commissioned by the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Stand Together Foundation, shows that most Americans see youth sports coaches as vital mentors and community builders. At a time when we’re searching for connection and unity, these findings offer a hopeful reminder of the people already making a difference every day.

Key findings include:

  • Two-thirds of Americans agree that youth sports coaches strengthen their community.
  • 56% believe coaches are “unsung heroes.”
  • 63% of coaches say they feel pride in helping someone grow.
  • Nearly half of adults think youth coaches strike just the right balance between competition and fun.

The most inspiring thing? The belief in the transformative impact that coaches have on youth spans every demographic—across gender, race, region, and political affiliation. In a time defined by division, Americans agree: coaches unite us.

Through the Yes, Coach!™ initiative, we’re teaming up with Stand Together Foundation to train and support 100,000 coach-mentors across the country. Coach-mentors that will go beyond the game—building confidence, character, and connection in kids’ lives.

“This poll confirms what we see on the field every day: coaches are unsung heroes,” said Ed Foster-Simeon, President & CEO of the U.S. Soccer Foundation. “As we prepare to welcome millions of fans to cities across the country for the World Cup, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in the people who shape the next generation.”

Across the country, coaches are already stepping up as leaders and mentors, using sports to build stronger, more connected communities.
