Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the major charitable arm of soccer in the United States, and POLITICO announced today that they will host the second annual Capital Soccer Classic at RFK Stadium in Washington on Tuesday, April 8, 2014.
The premier soccer event, presented by Johnson & Johnson and NIKE, kicks off with an embassy tournament – to celebrate this year’s World Cup – and is followed by both a congressional soccer match and a tournament for Capitol Hill staff. Participants will include members of Congress and the Congressional Soccer Caucus; representatives from several embassies, including Spain and Belgium; and former U.S. Soccer players, including all-time leader in caps and National Soccer Hall of Fame member Cobi Jones.
The Classic benefits Soccer for Success, the Foundation’s free after-school program that uses soccer as a tool to address children’s health issues and juvenile delinquency, while promoting healthy lifestyles in underserved communities. As the Foundation celebrates its 20th anniversary, the event also demonstrates the organization’s history of using soccer for social change.
