WHAT: The U.S. Soccer Foundation, Boston Parks and Recreation Department and America SCORES Boston will unveil a new state-of-the-art soccer field at LoPresti Park in Boston, MA on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 to many of the local youth who live in the East Boston area, marking the completion of the first phase of a $1.1 million project.
The Boston Parks and Recreation Department provides Boston residents and visitors with clean, green, safe and accessible open space in more than 2,200 acres of park land throughout the city. The field will be used for sport-based youth development programs delivered by America SCORES Boston, an affiliate of America SCORES, a national nonprofit that serves 8,000 students at more than 150 public and charter schools in 14 major cities across the country, with the mission to inspire urban youth to lead healthy lives, be engaged students and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world. Funding for the first phase of the field was provided by the U.S. Soccer Foundation, the major charitable arm of soccer in the United States, and a generous donation from Leighton Welch, board member of the U.S. Soccer Foundation. The U.S. Soccer Foundation is a leader in sports-based youth development and strives to use soccer as a vehicle for social change among youth in urban areas across the country.
The opening will include a short opening ceremony by the Mayor Walsh and community leaders, field ribbon cutting ceremony, and a Soccer for Success program demonstration with current players and alumni from SCORES.
