    U.S. Soccer Foundation Welcomes New Board Member Leighton Welch

    Washington, D.C., January 25, 2013 – The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the major charitable arm of soccer in the United States, today announced that Leighton Welch, co-chairman of the Foundation’s New York Leadership Council and president of Welch Capital Partners, has been appointed to its board of directors. Mr. Welch joins a board comprised of business and sports luminaries from former U.S. National Team players, to International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and Major League Soccer (MLS) executives, to leaders in the world of business and government.

    U.S. Soccer Foundation Announces New Players' Advisory Council Members

    Washington, D.C., December 12, 2012 - The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the major charitable arm of soccer in the United States, today announced two additions to its Players’ Advisory Council (PAC). Kenny Cooper of the New York Red Bulls and Todd Dunivant of the L.A. Galaxy will join the PAC, which includes high profile members, such as Landon Donovan, Angela Hucles, Devon McTavish, Ben Olsen, Logan Pause and Cat Whitehill.

    FOX Soccer Joins the U.S. Soccer Foundation's Creating Chances Campaign to Support Soccer for Social Change during Holiday Season

    Washington, D.C., December 7, 2012 – FOX Soccer will partner with the U.S. Soccer Foundation's Creating Chances fundraising campaign in an effort to provide children in underserved urban communities with opportunities to play soccer in a safe environment. Creating Chances supports the replication and expansion of Soccer for Success, the U.S Soccer Foundation’s after-school soccer based program that provides children in under-resourced communities with physical activity, nutrition education and mentorship at no cost to their families.

    U.S. Soccer Foundation Provides Free Soccer and Nutrition Lessons to Children in Underserved Urban Communities Nationwide

    The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the major charitable arm of soccer in the United States, has launched the fall season of its soccer-based afterschool program, Soccer for Success. Soccer for Success is the Foundation's nationally-recognized program that provides K-8 children in underserved urban communities with structured physical activity, nutrition education and mentorship at no cost to their families. Children in the program exercise for 90 minutes a day, at least three times per week, for 24 weeks in the academic year.

    Beyond Soccer of Lawrence, Mass. Wins U.S. Soccer Foundation Field of Dreams Award

    The U.S. Soccer Foundation today announced that Beyond Soccer of Lawrence, Mass., has been named the winner of the Field of Dreams campaign. The campaign, which ran for 30 days during July, focused on social media as a means to identify soccer fields and green spaces across the U.S. that could benefit from a Foundation Planning Grant. Lawrence, along with 54 other cities, competed for the chance to win $8,000 in credit towards planning services provided by CHA Sports, which could be used to develop a full-scale concept plan for executing a field-building project. CHA Sports is the official supplier for soccer facility design services nationwide and a partner of the U.S. Soccer Foundation.

    Channeling Greatness Through Soccer for Success

    As the Olympics have come to a close and we consider all the accomplishments of the athletes we've witnessed over the last two weeks, the term "greatness" is often used to describe their performances. Nike's new ad "Find Your Greatness" features an overweight, 12-year old Nathan Sorrell who comes into focus only as he slowly jogs towards the camera down a deserted dirt road at dusk. Nike's message is simple; we can't all be elite athletes like the ones we've watched in the Olympics but we can all be great and inspire greatness through simple acts like running. The ad is impactful, no doubt, but the content has generated some debate and criticism. Specifically, critics are concerned that the ad exploits Nathan's condition and enables further stigmatism. Others believe that just getting up and running, as the ad suggests, won't solve the childhood obesity epidemic in our country and Nike's intentions are merely propagating this myth.

    2012 Soccer For Success National Coaches Training Recap

    The U.S. Soccer Foundation hosted the inaugural 2012 Soccer for Success National Coaches Training at the Georgetown University Hotel & Conference Center in Washington, D.C. on July 27th through 29th. The event was an opportunity for coaches and program administrators from across the nation to learn the 2012-2013 Soccer for Success curriculum in order to properly execute the program for the children in their respective communities. Weekend sessions included on-field training, speakers, and workshops covering topics ranging from youth development to nutrition.

    U.S. Soccer Foundation Hosts Inaugural National Training for Soccer for Success Program

    The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, will host the inaugural 2012 Soccer for Success National Training at Georgetown University on July 27- 29, 2012. The 2012 Soccer for Success National Training will introduce over 150 new and seasoned Soccer for Success coaches to the new program curriculum for the 2012-2013 program year. Sessions and workshops at the event will focus on behavior management, nutrition and child safety. In addition, coaches will have the opportunity to participate in demonstrations of the curriculum in a live, on-the-field environment.

    U.S. Soccer Foundation Awards $40,000 in Grants to Support the Development of Fields Nationwide

    The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Major Charitable Arm of Soccer in the United States, announced on June 28, 2012 that it has awarded Planning Grants, totaling $40,000 in credit towards planning services from CHA Sports, to five non-profit organizations serving youth in urban, underserved areas. Since being established in 1994, the U.S. Soccer Foundation has awarded more than $57 million to non-profit organizations in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
