On a hazy Houston evening, Shaina and I were pummeled with soccer balls.
You read that right.
During a Soccer for Success scrimmage, we had the bright idea to stand next to an energetic bunch of 6th – 8th graders during a scrimmage. In fact, we stood in between multiple games occurring at the same time.
As Shaina fell to the ground after being hit in the back, and I ducked to avoid a ball smacking me right in the face – we burst into laughter. Our laughter, bundled with the sounds of joy from the games around us, floated into the evening air and added an additional soundtrack to the already bustling Houston community. I’m unaware of another time in my life where I would laugh after almost being injured – however, the proof that we did shows the positive energy that envelops the program.
After recovering from laughter, I took a step back to observe Soccer for Success. There was Coach Jaime excitedly screaming the names of fruits and vegetables whenever a child scored. In the next group, Coach Claudia, cheering on the older kids during their activities. Families lined around the field, beaming proudly. And Hector, flashing a bright smile, making everyone around him feel welcome and included.
Because of the coaches, because of dedicated families – Soccer for Success becomes successful. Shaina and I left the field with a new chant/motto – “Soccer will be success!” Soccer for Success, through hard work, dedication and fun, will be successful. We’re dedicated to that and so are our partners.
I hope you’ll continue to follow our work and get involved. Next time we visit a site, we’ll be sure to stand on the sidelines of the scrimmages (be sure to send Shaina a note about her back).
Until next time!
