“Our mission is to improve health, education, and employment outcomes for the most disadvantaged Americans by using sports to transfer the skills necessary so that they can achieve these outcomes for themselves. We also seek to raise awareness about the challenges of poverty in America so that as a country we can develop a more level playing field for all.” – Street Soccer USA
Street Soccer USA was founded by Lawrence Cann in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2007. Since its establishment, Street Soccer USA has expanded its reach to serve 16 cities across the country. Street Soccer USA serves at risk and homeless youth and adults—helping provide a network and opportunities to develop professionally. Street Soccer USA’s curriculum is designed to teach soft skills for managing life as well as school and the workplace. The goal is empowerment by giving people the necessary tools through soccer.
A recipient of a U.S. Soccer Foundation grant, the Foundation is a proud supporter of Street Soccer USA. Last June, Street Soccer USA and the U.S. Soccer Foundation teamed up to open a new Sport Court mini pitch at HELP USA‘s East New York location in Brooklyn, NY. (Take a look at a video of the unveiling!) The new pitch is bordered by a 200-unit family homeless shelter and three multi-family supportive housing buildings. The new field not only gave the community a safe play space, but sparked several new partnerships to provide afterschool programming and free health and counseling services to children and families.
Recently, the Washington Post featured Street Soccer USA, in an in-depth article about the non-profit’s successful branch in Philadelphia. The article outlines how Street Soccer USA effectively ties in crucial life skills and lessons in each practice: goal-setting, reliability, or teamwork, to name a few. The program helps participants get back on their feet –figuratively, and literally. Take a look at the full article to learn more.
Street Soccer USA is a great example of the diversity within sport for social change. There are inspiring organizations serving communities all across the country. We are proud to honor Street Soccer USA as this month’s Foundation All-Star.
