Giving The Game

For Louis, a 13-year-old in Centreville, Va., choosing a service project for his upcoming bar mitzvah was easy. Soccer is a big part of Louis’ life — he’s been playing for nine years. So when tasked with picking a project that would help to make the world a better place, Louis chose to spread the joy of the game. “I wanted to do something I loved doing, and the idea came easily.”

After some research, he came across the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Passback program.

“I got the word out and collected money donations by doing yard work, pet-sitting and a lemonade stand and gathered soccer equipment from my community,” Louis said. Over the course of three busy and dedicated months, he collected $275 for new equipment, as well as more than 300 pieces of gently-used soccer gear.

“I love the game and wanted it to be passed on to kids who don’t have the resources and money to play,” he said. “I hope the kids will enjoy the game as much as me, encourage each other to work hard and do well — not only in the game but in their futures as well. That’s what the U.S. Soccer Foundation helped me do.”

Louis’ dedication sets an inspiring example.

“He has done this project on his own,” his mother points out. “We are very proud of what he accomplished and of his desire to help kids with confidence building, teamwork and to do well in their lives.”

Louis plays for his local club’s travel team. His favorite thing about playing soccer is “scoring goals for the team and having fun.”

Because of his passion, and the generosity of his community, many more kids will have the chance to experience soccer’s many benefits.
